Fat Feeds Leukemia Cells According to Researchers at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles

Bone marrow from a child with leukemia before (left) and after (right) chemotherapy. Chemotherapy causes an increase in the number and size of the fat cells in the marrow (white ovals). These fat cells have a large amount of an enzyme (glutamine synthetase, which shows up as brown in this picture), allowing them to produce glutamine and potentially feed nearby leukemia cells. Not many people realize that apart from the physical problems, being overweight can make you more likely to suffer from ther far-reaching health problems.

Now if you as an overweight person visits your physician or doctor, they are much more likely to talk about how being overweight is bad for your heart than anything else. What they won’t tell you, maybe that’s because it’s not something widely broadcast even in the medical profession, is that being overweight means that you are more likely to suffer with cancer.

The thing is I suppose if you have a heart problem due to being overweight, well you can lose the weight and for most people their heart problems will also disappear as the weight drops off. Unfortunately that is not the same with cancer.

Here’s a fairly technical article, I must admit, from the Los Angeles Children’s’ Hospital. It should be noted, I have got quite a reputation for investigating cancers particularly as you might have guessed, in children. Not only do they have statistics to show that obese people are more likely to have cancer than lean people, they have taken their research as stage further and up to a certain point of proving that this is true.

Top 10 Reasons Why You’re Not Losing Weight

Here’s a nice little article from Huffington Post – A list of 10 top reasons why you’re not losing weight.

It lists things like:

– You have a medical condition

– You’re not varying your work outs

– Not being consistent in your weight loss efforts

– You’re drinking too many sugary drinks and quite a few other things as well.

It’s well worth the read. I can’t promise you any in depth knowledge or understanding but its  timely reminders of what we should and shouldn’t be doing, I think will be worth the 5 minutes you popping over to have a look at it.

New Research Suggests Friendly Bacteria May Shrink Tumours

SEM_Lymphocyte

Here’s a fascinating little snippy bit of a story which suggests another use for your favorite probiotic drink. Apparently researchers from the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland have been looking at the way that Lactobacillus casei which is commonly found in the human mouth and gut and it should be added is one of the most common ingredient used in many probiotic drinks is affecting the way that cancer tumors grow.

According to their research L. casei as it’s often known could actually inhibit tumor growth. If this is found to be true it obviously opens up a huge range of possibilities of how these bacteria that are generally safe to humans can be used to treat tumors from the inside.

So far the researchers have grown the bacteria in small beads immersed in a growing solution and their understanding today is that the bacteria produced certain molecules that appeared to be toxic to cancer tumors. Wanting to test this further still, researchers then injected this encapsulated bacteria into the tumors of mice that had cancer and apparently the bacteria significantly inhibited the growth of the tumors within the mice.

Obviously if this research tends out to be of further merit then it holds great promise. Of course one of the best ways of diminishing your chances to develop cancer is to follow a low carb way of living. This has the advantage of diminishing the amount of sugar and other carbohydrates that you eat which are the food that cancers thrive on which like a good probiotic is food for thought.

Overweight While Younger Ups Kidney Risk Later

1352310012u24K0u

According to this study by Dr. Dorothea Nitsch of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, we are more likely to suffer chronic kidney disease when we’re older if we are fat when we’re younger. In fact according to the latest research from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, you’re more than twice as likely to have CKD in your 60s if you’re overweight in your 20s than you would be if you stayed at a normal weight right up until your 60s.

What I found strange about the whole report interesting though it is, is that they don’t seem to be able to nail down the causes of this statistical correlation.

Yet when you consider what the kidneys do for our body, clearing out a lot of the garbage that it doesn’t need, someone who is overweight when they’re younger is producing a lot more garbage for their kidneys to clear out.

It shouldn’t be any wonder that after a lifetime of having to work harder than the kidneys of somebody consuming normal amounts of food that the kidneys of an overweight person would start to fail quite drastically as they get older.

How carbs are throwing your hormones out of whack

13291559797db0zh

It seems nearly everyday that there are studies coming out that show the correlation between the amount of sugar that we as both a population and individuals consume and the slow but steady rise in one health problem or another.

In this particular article the author shows quite clearly that hormone imbalances suffered by both men and women are the result of our hormonal system under daily attack from the unhealthy things in the food that we eat. As the author says the number one hormonal imbalance in general society is chronically high insulin levels. He goes on to say that the primary problem is related directly to our diets.

We all know that sugar will cause insulin levels to rise but any carbohydrate-dense food will do the same. It goes on to say that this chronically high insulin levels and fluctuating blood sugar levels are a major source of stress on the body and these imbalances can in turn upset the regulation of other hormones.

But it’s not all bad news. As the article also reveals a number of simple steps that everyone of us can take in order to reset our bodies and overcome the problems.

Low-Carb Diet May Slow Alzheimer’s Disease

1348139045M9KWP0

You know it’s curious when many people ask me about what I think they should do about such and such a condition. They all seem surprised when I say “well, let’s have a look at what you’re eating before we go any further” because over the years I found truly that so many of the problems, diseases, illnesses both physical and mental far too often have a source or certainly a highly contributory factor in what we eat and having watched my mother suffer with Parkinson’s disease and many of her friends and those in that generation suffer with Alzheimer’s as well.

Nothing yet has convinced me that there’s not quite a bit of truth that the gradual lowering in quality of our food has contributed quite strongly to the gradual increase in many of the health problems that we as a society suffer which is why I’m quite happy to  recommend the article that I’m linking to below by Dr. Mercola who’s looking at the work of another doctor, Dr. Ron Rosedale, who’s a prominent  expert in low carb and high-quality fat approach to improving health and the article points to a very interesting conclusion that Alzheimer’s might well be considered as brain diabetes.

It’s well worth a good read as not only do they point out some of the more cutting edge work about exactly what casues Alzheimer’s but they lead on from that and tell us about how we can avoid Alzheimer’s just by simple changes in our diet and behavior to a certain extent anyway, fairly recommend as well and I hope it helps you.
