Cutting Out the Sugar Cravings in Your Diet

Some food manufacturers engineer products to contain (from their point of view) the optimal balance of sugar and high fructose corn syrup. Then when you eat them you feel maximum crave and keep eating, drinking and buying more of their products. Its what they call your bliss point!

They aim for that sweet spot that keeps you coming back for more. Its why you’ll find sugar in spaghetti sauce, peanut butter, ketchup, yogurt and (watch out for this!) low-fat, processed, frozen foods that say healthy or lean on the package.

But what can you do about it? see here

Can You Smell Obesity?

According to the latest research, it may be on your breath.

It turns out that obesity may be detectable as a gas, thanks to organisms that inhabit our gut. In a study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, researchers extend our knowledge about the hidden universe of the  that live within us to show that obesity is associated with certain populations of microbes that give off a distinctive gas.

glucose meterI have been asked by diabetics in the past what they should do and my advice has always been to start on Atkins induction and then take it from there. That does have the tendency to “normalize” blood sugar levels for virtually everybody diabetics included.

Many of those who have taken that approach have found that their problem with diabetes gets dealt with very quickly and the next visit to their doctor is a far more pleasant experience for them and quite often an eye opener for the doctor in question.

Also getting a glucose meter is a sound advice and these are inexpensive and readily available. Just watch out for the price of testing strips as it may be better to buy a slightly more expensive meter that has the cheaper consumables as these quickly mount up particularly if you’re testing more than once or twice a day.

Hope that helps,

This is a comment I made on a forum post about diabetes and low carb diet

The Best Diet to Avoid Diabetes

Below is another one of my comments on a post at Jimmy Moore’s about diabetes

Jimmy Moore wrote:

The Best Diet to Avoid Diabetes: http://www.diabetesincontrol.com/index.p…om_content ~ People say to just ignore media comparisons of the best diets for this and that. But THIS is precisely why the annual U.S. News & World Report diet rankings are so detrimental. The echo effect that takes place because of diets like DASH (cutting most salt from your diet) is enormous. The problem is those rankings are predicated on the low-fat, high-carb dogma that has gotten us MORE obesity, diabetes and heart disease than we’ve ever had before. Don’t fall for the foolish information that is repeated ad nauseam by the willing accomplices in the health media.

My opinion:

I’m not diabetic but I think I probably would be if I follow this diet. To my mind it seems that this diet is far more likely to cause diabetes than it is to help someone suffering with diabetes to bring their condition under control.

Good Bacteria in the Intestine Prevent Diabetes, Study Suggests

Another post from jimmy Moore about good bacteria that I have replied on

Jimmy Moore said:

Good Bacteria in the Intestine Prevent Diabetes, Study Suggests:

Why is gut flora so important? This new research shows that keeping all those good buggers where they need to be is a great way to ward off diseases like Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis and even diabetes! And this isn’t just for adults–kids need to be feeding their gut flora well so they will not experience a lifetime of health issues. This damaged good bacteria system is very likely why diabetes has increased so rapidly in our world of Purel and a clean environment everywhere. To paraphrase Mark Sisson from my interview with him last week, we need to let kids start playing in the dirt again!

My thoughts:

It’s not so much that we as well as our children need to play in the dirt to build up our immunity. It’s more a case of that we need to eat the right types of food in order to ensure that the bacteria that does end up in our stomach is beneficial to the body rather than harmful. Obviously the easiest and the quickest solution to this is by taking a course of probiotics which may work for some people.

Another way of building healthy gut bacteria is of course by eating foods that have been fermented in a traditional way that promotes the presence of these bacteria when they’re eaten. Things like sauerkraut and other fermented vegetables are probably some of the richest sources that are relatively easily available to most people as are fresh yogurts that include the live bacteria needed to make them. That of course cuts out completely all commercially made yogurts as live bacteria are either killed off during the final parts of the manufacturing process or poisoned by other ingredients added to the yogurt in order to ensure a longer shelf life.

Whichever way you cut it we definitely need to build up the healthy bacteria in our digestive system and make sure that the food we eat in no way promotes harmful bacteria to grow and multiply as that can only lead to disease later on. When you consider that at anyone time, the number of bacteria in our intestine far out numbers the number of cells in our body then the phrase “you are what you eat” takes on a whole new meaning.

Mark

Can your statin give you a heart attack?

Another comment from me on a post at forum.lowcarber.org regarding statin

Nancy LC:

Robs the body of CoQ10 which is need to power the body (including the heart), lowers insulin sensitivity, increases risk of diabetes…

Are you sure you want to take that pill just to get a lower meaningless number?

My response:

Hi Nancy LC,

More and more studies are showing that indeed statins do interfere with cardiac function and some of those studies have concluded that statins may actually cause heart failure. So I guess the answer to your question is, yes, they can give you a heart attack.

Frankly, whilst the manufactures may not admit this at the moment, when you look at their list of contraindications and adverse reactions, these are frankly quite scary. Even the common ones aren’t something that you would particularly want such as up to 14% of people can get diarrhea from taking statins, 8% of people taking statins can experience urinary tract infection disease. Of the most serious adverse effects is liver failure, autoimmune disease, myalgia and hemorrhagic cerebral infarction.

I’ve attached the slide from my MicroMedex Drug Information program as of course, it’s far better to see the proof rather than just take my word for it.

Cheers,

Mark
