Butter

butter-28979076

Before the 1920s heart disease was rare in most of the western world. Yet through the 20s right up until the 70s the incidence of heart disease rose to become one of the most deadly ailments of modern times. In fact some have said that it is actually the West’s number one killer.

The strange thing is that during the same time the amount of butter that we consumed dropped by over 25% from which we could all conclude that butter is not a cause of heart disease.

So what is the truth about butter? Why should we eat it and if our conclusion is that butter is actually good for us then why have we been told for so long that it is actually harmful to consume lots of quantities of butter or indeed any animal fat for that matter.

Well firstly let’s look at what butter has got in it that’s good for us starting with the vitamins. Butter is very high in vitamin A and that’s needed to ensure that both our adrenal and thyroid glands function properly and here’s where the time that heart disease comes once again in that both of these glands are important for proper functioning of both our hearts and cardiovascular system.

Vitamin E which is also found in butter as well as vitamin A are quite strong antioxidants which again play an important part in keeping the body healthy. Butter also contains lecithin and that’s used for ensuring that the cholesterol and other fat constituents in butter are properly assimilated and metabolized.

Yes I mentioned cholesterol and butter is a good source of dietary cholesterol but did you know that cholesterol is also an antioxidant? In fact cholesterol is a highly potent antioxidant that is quickly released into the blood when our body senses that we have eaten too many foods containing harmful free radicals.

Now here’s the strange thing. Would it surprise you to learn the fact that some of the foods which contain the highest levels of these harmful free radicals are actually the very same that had been touted over the last few decades as being healthy for us that is margarine and other highly processed vegetable oils.

Now in this short response I won’t go into details but it’s worth knowing that butter is beneficial in aiding the immune system for good gastrointestinal health, in the growth and development of children and over the years a number of studies have found that butter consumption is helpful to guard against arthritis, osteoporosis and as it’s a good source of iodine as I’ve mentioned earlier good functioning of the thyroid gland.

Now when you consider the damage that other man made hydrogenated fats have caused mankind over the last few decades it strikes me as odd that intelligent people are still touting the supposed benefits of these types of fats. But there again I suppose some people will say anything if they’re paid enough money to do so.

Counting Carbs in Vegetable Broth

As with many commercially made products you don’t really know what’s in there.

Personally I always prefer home made for things like broth and soups and so on simply because you know exactly what’s got into them and you can account for every part of the nutritional equation plus of course if you’re like me and prefer organic you can make sure that the ingredients that you use are good and wholesome as opposed to something that has come out in the back end of the factory.

I know which I prefer.

Eating carbs to break a stall?

Here’s actually a diet based on exactly what you described. Heavily overeating on carbohydrates just one day a week which the people that use it claim then causes the body to go into reverse as they put it.

Personally I can’t see eating that many carbs in one day can do anybody any good.

Stalls to  a certain extent are a part of any weight loss plan and with one as effective as low carb they’re going to be even more noticeable.

In many ways it really is just proof that you’re moving in the right direction.

Hope that helps,

Ketosis breath – Will it ever go away?

Here’s a lit of everything you need to do in order to avoid ketosis breath:

1. Make sure you’re very very very well hydrated.

2. Make sure your digestive system, enzymes and bacteria are well balanced as in take a good
quality probiotics, eat yogurt and take enzyme supplements.

3. Make sure you don’t have some sort of underlying fungal infection such as Candida or thrush as it can be aggravated by a change in diet particularly if that change involves eating more cheese and dairy.

4. The fact that we are eating a high fat diet does mean that the products of that fat being broken down will contribute to things that our body isn’t generally used to handling.

So as others have mentioned oral hygiene is very important and as the first batch of enzymes that our body uses to break down food start with our saliva and the enzymes within our saliva will change according to what we eat then there is always a period of readjustment. So yes it should go away.

In the meantime a good swish around with diluted hydrogen peroxide will tend to keep most things at bay.  Now you can dip your toothbrush in hydrogen peroxide and then dip it in bicarb of soda and brush your teeth with that. It will have the effect of killing the bacteria, cleaning the teeth and as an advantageous side effect will also whiten the teeth gradually as well.

Hope that helps,

Mark

Pub drinks for LCHF? (UK)

http://www.dreamstime.com/-image4714405Being with friends is probably one of the most difficult situations we low carbers face and the pressure to conform with what others do is always lurking in the shadows but there’s not a lot that will persuade you to ruin all the hard work that you’ve done.

I always find the best approach when in situations like that is to look the person in the eye and say “I’ve made a decision that my long term  health both for me and  those  that I love is far more important than maybe a short term enjoyment.  No I just don’t drink that sort of stuff anymore”- soda or whatever it is you fancy.

The most powerful way of dealing with this though is to actually be the first one to buy around the drinks. That way you set the pattern right from the get go and as you are the one who bought it and paid for it no one can really try and twist your arm that you should be drinking something else and of course once the pattern is set you’ll probably get comments like “Oh and I suppose it’s another soda for you?” or whatever else their drinking.

The key in any situation like this is to always take control and remain in control. Whilst you may be open for  some public mickey taking you may well find as I have in the past that many of your friends will come up to you and maybe clumsily congratulate you for doing what you’re doing often finishing with something like “I wish I had your will power”.

Hope that helps,

Mark

If Psyllium doesn’t work for constipation

Probiotic supplements well often work but they have to be a broad-ranged one and one that guarantees to have a high percentage of live bacteria.

In addition to that it is important to take digestive enzymes as this is the bit that most people forget – our food is not handled by bacteria alone.  It’s the enzymes produced by the pancreas that do really the majority of the work and again a good quality digestive enzyme supplement is a must.

We never do ourselves any favor by trying to save money using the cheapest supplements on the shelf.

Hope that helps,

Mark
