Probiotics Are Becoming More In Vogue

Pills Fewer people are taking fish oil, vitamin C and calcium supplements, according to a recent survey of dietary supplement users.

The survey, conducted by Consumerlab.com, also showed that the number of people using probiotics has increased.

“The changes in supplement use seem to reflect research findings that made headlines this past year, as well as a shift in promotional emphasis for some of these supplements,” Dr. Tod Cooperman, M.D., the president of ConsumerLab.com, said in a statement.

“In the past, probiotics were marketed mainly to women and for irritable bowel syndrome, but are now finding a wider audience due to expanded treatment applications, including antibiotic-related diarrhea, diverticular disease and even anxiety,” Cooperman said. “Meanwhile, too much calcium has been shown to pose increased risk of cardiovascular disease, while high-dose vitamin C appears to increase the risk of kidney stones and cataracts. The benefits of fish oil now seem largely limited to people who don’t eat fish or have high triglycerides.”

The survey included more than 10,000 people, and respondents were all classified as “heavy” users of supplements (taking 6.6 supplements a day, on average).

Benefits Of Probiotics: Why Eating Yogurt Can Help You lose Weight

Yogurt A new study claims that the regular consumption of probiotics could help accelerate weight loss in women.

Published jointly out of food and yogurt giant Nestlé and Université Laval in Quebec, the research suggests that obese women who add probiotics to their diet plan — most commonly found in yogurt — could lose twice as much weight as those who don’t.

Based on the premise that the intestinal flora of obese people differs from thin people — likely due to a diet high in fat and low in fibre — scientists set out to see if the consumption of “good bacteria” could help reset the balance of gut microbiota.

To test out their theory, researchers recruited 125 overweight men and women who were put on a 12-week weight loss diet, followed by another 12-week maintenance program. During the 24-week period, half the participants were instructed to take two pills of probiotics daily, while the other half received a placebo.

After the first period, women who took probiotics lost an average of 4.4 kg (about 10 lbs) while their placebo counterparts lost 2.6 kg (about 6 lbs).

By the end of the 24-week period, women in the probiotic group had continued to lose weight for a total of 5.2 kg per person (about 11 lbs), while the placebo group remained stable.

New Research Suggests Friendly Bacteria May Shrink Tumours

Here’s a fascinating little snippy bit of a story which suggests another use for your favorite probiotic drink. Apparently researchers from the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland have been looking at the way that Lactobacillus casei which is commonly found in the human mouth and gut and it should be added is one of the most common ingredient used in many probiotic drinks is affecting the way that cancer tumors grow.

According to their research L. casei as it’s often known could actually inhibit tumor growth. If this is found to be true it obviously opens up a huge range of possibilities of how these bacteria that are generally safe to humans can be used to treat tumors from the inside.

So far the researchers have grown the bacteria in small beads immersed in a growing solution and their understanding today is that the bacteria produced certain molecules that appeared to be toxic to cancer tumors. Wanting to test this further still, researchers then injected this encapsulated bacteria into the tumors of mice that had cancer and apparently the bacteria significantly inhibited the growth of the tumors within the mice.

Obviously if this research tends out to be of further merit then it holds great promise. Of course one of the best ways of diminishing your chances to develop cancer is to follow a low carb way of living. This has the advantage of diminishing the amount of sugar and other carbohydrates that you eat which are the food that cancers thrive on which like a good probiotic is food for thought.

Did you know that the number of bacteria in our body outnumbers the number of cells in our body?

That is something that I personally find totally amazing. But you know in many ways we wouldn’t be able to live without them. Our bodies even use bacteria for digesting our food along with a healthy dose of enzymes and some really remarkable and well balanced processes but without those friendly bacteria in our digestive system we would find it very difficult to get the full range of nutrients that we need.
